Tastemaker:

Be honest: would you rather go on a date in a dark restaurant or would you rather kick off your weekend with a great daytime date? Both are good, but nothing beats an ocean view on a weekend morning.

There are several places to rent a bike on the beach, but if I might make a suggestion, go with Perry's Cafe and Beach Rentals, which opens at 9am on weekends. Be aware that Perry's Ocean Park locations will be busy, and parking will be difficult, on Sundays due to the Farmer's Market being one block east. If you are planning your date on a Sunday, try the location on Ocean between Arizona and Wilshire. It's a very good idea to book ahead at whichever location you choose.

Is there anything more Californian than dining alfresco, preferably with an unbeatable view of the ocean? Shutters, one of Santa Monica's finest hotels, has two options for weekend brunch: Coast or 1 Pico. Both are excellent choices, but Coast is a more casual setting and 1 Pico is more high-end (with an absolutely stunning patio). Whichever you prefer, it's best to book a table well in advance.

Yes, the Santa Monica Pier is touristy. But it's still fun. After brunch, bike to the pier. (If you want to get brunch before going on a ride, consider doing brunch, then the pier, then renting a bike.) The Carousel is famous for a reason - it's over 100 years old and has appeared in such films as "The Sting". Don't be shy - it's still fun to ride no matter what your age is. Enjoy the rides and games at Pacific Park and at the Playland arcade - and don't forget to get a funnel cake! And did you know Heal the Bay has a small aquarium tucked away under the pier?
