Tastemaker:

Although Mr. Roarke, Tattoo and Roarke's grand niece, Elena, won't be joining you on this adventure (Fox cancelled the series reboot after two seasons!), Catalina Island - just 30 miles off the coast of Long Beach - can still be YOUR fantasy island

Forget Irish rocker Chris de Burgh's warning "Don't Pay The Ferryman" until he gets you to the other side... Catalina Express won't let you board unless you buy your ticket BEFORE they set sail. Silly song jokes aside, Catalina Express isn't just one boat but a fleet of eight high-speed vessels, four of which are mega-sized catamarans. The crown jewel of the fleet, Catalina Jet, holds 450 people and can reach a top speed of 37 knots, resulting in a lightning fast one-hour journey from port to port. With three levels, two snack bars, airplane-style in-cabin seating, and exceptional stability, even those prone to sea sickness will enjoy this trip.

Hiking and biking are a great way to see Catalina Island, but for the truly adventurous, a guided scuba diving or snorkeling trip is the way to go. Whether you're exploring Lover's Cove Marine Preserve or Casino Point Dive Park, the protected waters are a sanctuary for an abundance of marine life. Massive black sea bass, majestic bat rays, brilliant orange garibaldi's (California's official state fish), and playful harbor seals are but a smattering of the creatures you're likely to encounter just offshore, and the incredible kelp forests - with gargantuan plants extending from sea bed to surface, supporting sea life of every imaginable description - will make you feel like you're starring in a Jacques Cousteau documentary.

There are many places to stay on Catalina Island - from no-frills campsites to luxury hotels. But when I go to Catalina, there's only one place for me: the Aurora Hotel. And if I'm going to the Aurora, I'm booking the Celebrity Suite. Forget the fireplace, comfy robes, museum-worthy artwork, etched-glass shoji screens and six-headed shower... The private sunporch - offering a postcard-perfect view of the bay - is what'll keep you coming back. And when the urge to strut out on that overlook "au naturel" in the middle of the night hits you, don't resist!
